BRIMPTON, a village in a parish of its name, in the hundred of Faircross, is six miles east from Newbury. This parish, prior to the reformation, belonged to the Kights of St. John of Jerusalem; the manor and estate is now the property of the Earl of Falmouth. The church is a small plain structure, of which the Rev. Edward Cove is minister. The population of the parish, by the census for 1821, was 464. |

WALLINGFORD, a borough and market town, is situated in the hundred or Moreton, upon the banks of the Thames, 45 miles from London, 15 from Reading, 13 from Oxford, 10 from Abingdon, and one mile and a half from Bensington, a post village, on the opposite side of the Thames. This is a very ancient town, and was one of considerable importance in the time of the Romans, who had here a castle of extraordinary strength and extent, which edifice was in existence at the time of the civil wars, and was repaired and garrisoned by Charles I. In 1653 it was demolished, and there now only remain some parts of the mouldering walls, near the river, which give no idea of that strength which armies once besieged in vain. The name 'Wallingford' is said to be derived from Guallen, or the Roman Vallum, both signifying a place surrounded by a wall or fortifications, from which, with its ford over the Thames, is deduced its appellation. This town received its charter of incorporation from James I. which, appointed for its government a mayor, recorder, town clerk, five aldermen (beside the mayor) and 18 assistant burgesses, two of whom are also termed bailiffs; the aldermen are justices of the peace for the borough, and the mayor for the time is coroner. A court leet is held annually on Wednesday in Easter week, in the town-hall; a court for the recovery of debts every Wednesday; and a court of quarter sessions in the week when those for the county take place. The borough has returned members to parliament from the earliest period of parliamentary history; the right of voting is in the inhabitants paying scot and lot; the mayor is the returning officer, and the present representatives are Wm. Lewis Hughes and Robert Knight, Esqrs. The malt trade at one period used to flourish here to a very great extent, but it has much declined; yet there are still some respectable establishments in that business. There are three good inns here, the 'Lamb' being the principal commercial and posting house. Wallingford is divided into four parishes, viz. St. Mary-the-more, St. Peter, St. Leonard, and All-hallows; the three former have churches, but the latter none; the living all rectories. The patronage of St. Mary-the-more and St. Leonard is in the Lord Chancellor, and the present incumbent is the Rev. John Langley. The benefice of St. Peter is in the gift of James Blackstone, Esq. son of the late Sir Wm. Blackstone, through whose exertions this church was rebuilt about 1765; the spire, which is very handsome and of singular form, was erected at the sole expense of this gentleman. The other places of worship are for the baptists and independent and Wesleyan methodists. Here are a free grammar and infants' schools, alms-houses for six poor women, and a spacious workhouse. The land around here is in a high state of agriculture, very fertile, and though rather flat, the general appearance of the country is extremely pleasant. There is now only one fair held in the year, on the 29th September, a statute and pleasure fair. Market day Friday. The number of inhabitants in the borough, by the census of 1821, was 2,093. CHOLSEY, a respectable village in a parish of its name, in the hundred of Reading, is about two miles from Wallingford. Before the reformation this parish contained the largest and most compact farm in England; the rent amounting even in those early days to £1000. annually. The great barn in which the abbot of Reading deposited his tithes is still to be seen. The living of this parish is a vicarage, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor; the present incumbent is the Rev. Henry Wyatt Cottle. The number of inhabitants, in 1821, was 975. BRIGHTWELL, a small village and parish in the hundred of Moreton is two miles south of Wallingford. It contains a neat church, of which the Rev. R. A. Burney is the rector, and about 600 inhabitants. SOTWELL, an inconsiderable parish and village, in the same hundred as Brightwell, about a mile from that place and Wallingford; has a small church, in the rectorship of the Rev. John Langley, and about 150 inhabitants. NEWNHAM, in the parish of Newnham-Murren, and CROMARSH, in the parish of Cromarsh-Gifford, are two small villages, in the hundred of Langtree and county of Oxford, divided from Wallingford by the Tames; each containing its parish church. The population of Cromarsh, in 1821, was 230, and Newnham 260 persons. BRIGHTWELL, a parish in the hundred of MORETON, county of BERKS, 2 1/2 miles (W.N.W.) from Wallingford, containing, with the hamlets of Mackney and Slade-End, 546 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Berks, and diocese of Salisbury, rated in the king's books at £44. 17. 11., and in the patronage of the Bishop of Winchester. The church, dedicated to St. Agatha, contains, among other monuments, |

one to the memory of Thomas Godwyn, D.D., author of a treatise on the Jewish and Roman antiquities, who died rector of this parish in 1642. There is a meeting-house for dissenters. The parish is bounded on the north by the river Thames, and on the south by the Tadsey. Here was anciently a castle, which, in 1153, was given up by Stephen to Henry II., then Duke of Normandy, after the treaty of peace concluded between him and Matilda of Wallingford, and probably soon afterwards demolished, for its site is not even known, though conjectured to have been within the moat where the manor farm-house now stands. Frances Riggins, in 1726, left a small annuity for the instruction of children, and for supplying the poor with bread. The Bishop of Winchester, as lord paramount, holds a court annually. |

At the period of the Norman survey there were two churches in the parish, and remains of an ancient ecclesiastical edifice are visible at a farm=house, about half a mile from the present church. The Knights Hospitallers appear to have had an establishment here in the time of Henry III. |

DUDCOTE, a parish in the hundred or MORETON, county of BERKS, 6 miles (W. by N.) from Wallingford, containing 197 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Berks, and diocese of Salisbury, rated in the king's books at £20. 12. 6., and in the patronage of the Principal and Fellows of Brasenose College, Oxford. The church is dedicated to All Saints. |

THATCHAM, a parish partly in the hundred of FAIRCROSS, but chiefly in that of READING, county of BERKS, 3 miles (E.) from Newbury, containing, with the chapelries of Greenham and Midgham, 3677 inhabitants. This place, according to the Norman survey, appears to have been once a town of some importance; tradition has assigned to it the rank of a borough, but there is no prof that it every sent representatives to parliament. A market, on Sunday, was confirmed, by charter of Henry II., to the abbot, or monks, of Reading, then possessors of Thatcham, which was subsequently changed to Thursday, in 1218, by Henry III.; but it |

has long been discontinued: the remains of the butter-cross still exist. The town is pleasantly situated near the navigable river Kennet, on the Bath road: the inhabitants are well supplied iwth water. The Kennet and Avon canal passes a little to the southward. The chief source of employment is a manufactory for galloons and black ribands; and there is a paper-mill at Colthropt. A statute fair is held on the first Tuesday after October 12th. |

The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Berks, and diocese of Salisbury, rated in the king's books at £20, and in the patronage of William Hanbury, Esq. The church, which is dedicated to St. Luke, has some portions in the early, and some in the later, style of English architecture: at the south entrance is a fine Norman arch, and in the interior are, an altar-tomb to the memory of William Danvers, Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas; and a mural monument to Ncholas Fuller, Esq., barrister of Gray's Inn. There is a place of worship for Independents. A free school was founded, in 1707, by Lady Frances Winchcomb, who gave, by deed to trustees, a rent-charge of £53 per annum, for the education of thirty poor boys of the parishes of Thatcham, Bucklebury, and Little Shefford, and apprenticing some of them. It was opened about the year 1713, but continued only for a few years, in consequence of the attainder of Lord Bolingvroke, who was the owner of the estate charged, and also the only surviving trustee of the school, &c., the affairs of the charity subsequently came under the direction of the court of Chancery. In 1741, arrears were recovered sufficient to purchase £1406. 9. 7., old South sea annuities, since which period the funds have continued to increase, the amount of stock being now upwards of £5000, exclusively of the rent-charge of £53, which is regularly received. The school was re-opened in June 1794, under the regulations of the decree of the court of Chancery, and forty boys are educated, upon the Madras system, and clothed, five or six of them being annually apprenticed, with a premium of £10: those who are not apprenticed receive a small gratuity, on leaving the school, to fit them for service. The school-house was originally a decayed chapel, purchased by Lady Winchcomb for the purpose. A National school, erected in 1826, in which fifty boys and ninety girls are instructed, and an infant school, are supported by subscription. There is an almshouse for nine widows, founded by means of bequests from the Rev. Mr. Herdsman and John Hunt, besides various minor charitable benefactions. |

WALLINGFORD, a borough and market town, having exclusive jurisdiction, though locally in the hundred of Moreton, county of BERKS 15 miles (N. N. W.) from Reading, and 46 (W. by N.) from London, containing, with the extra-parochial liberty of the Castle, but exclusively of the liberty of Clapcot, which is in the parish of Allhallows, 2093 inhabitants, according to the census of 1821, since which period the population has increased to about 2600. The name is derived from the ancient British word Guallen, or the Roman Vallum, each signifying "an old fort," and from a ford over the Thames: subsequently to the Roman invasion, it was converted into a strong fortification by that people, and is supposed to have been the principal station of the Attrebatii. On the arrival of the Saxons, it became one of their principal forts, and continued to be a place of considerable repute, until it was burnt by the Danes, in 1006: from the effects of this calamity it speedily recovered, and, in the reign of Edward the Confessor, had risen to the dignity of a royal prescriptive borough. At the Conquest, William, having arrived with his army, recived here the homage of Stigand, Archbishop of Canterbury, and many other prelates and barons. During the civil war between Stephen and the Empress Matilda, the castle was occupied and held for the latter: it was subsequently the place of meeting between John and the barons. The honour, having become vested in the crown, was given by Richard I. to his brother John; and Henry III., on being elected King of the Romans, entertained all the prelates and barons in the castle. Having been subsequently annexed, by act of parliament, to the duchy of Cornwall, on the reversion of these estates to the crown, the castle and manor were granted to Cardinal Wolsey, who conferred them on his then newly-erected college |

of Christ Church, Oxford; and, in Camden's time, part of the castle was used, as an occasional retreat in time of sickness, by the students of that college: a portion of these buildings, called the "Priests' Chambers," has been converted into a malthouse. At the commencement of the parliamentary war, it was repaired and garrisoned for the king, and was not surrendered till nearly the close of the war; and, about four years afterwards, in 1653, it was completely demolished, insomuch that, at present, part of a wall towards the river is all that remains of this ancient and celebrated structure. |

The town is situated on the road between Reading and Oxford, and has a remarkably neat and clean appearance: it consists principally of two streets, well paved and lighted with oil, according to the provisions of an act obtained in 1795: the inhabitants are abundantly supplied with water. Across the river Thames, which passes on the eastern side of the town, is a fine stone bridge of several arches, about three hundred yards in length, constructed in 1809, in lieu of a dilapidated structure which was supposed to have been built five centuries ago: there is a fund of £42 per annum for its repair, being a rent-charge on houses, under the management of two bridge-masters chosen annually from the burgesses. Some business is done in malting, but it is not so extensive as formerly. A line of communication has been opened with Birmingham, Bath, and Bristol, by means of a canal navigation, running into the Thames, by which river coal is brought hither, and corn and flour are conveyed to London and other places. The market is on Friday; and a statute and pleasure fair is held on the 29th of September. By the charter of incorporation, obtained in the reign of James I., and confirmed and enlarged by Charles I., the government is vested in a mayor, high steward, recorder, six aldermen, and eighteen burgesses, or, as they are generally termed, assistants; with a chamberlain, two bailiffs, and two bridge-men, who are annually elected from the burgesses by the mayor; and a town clerk, who is also chosen, by the corporation, from among the burgesses. The mayor, who is also coroner, aldermen, and recorder, are justices of the peace, exercising exclusive jurisdiction. A court of quarter session is held, at which the mayor, or recorder, presides: it was formerly empowered to inflict capital punishment, but its authority is now limited to transportation. In former times, criminals convicted capitally in this borough, for the first time, had their lives spared on certain conditions; and, in the 45th of Henry III., a return made by the jurors declared, that no person belonging to the borough ought to be executed for one offence. The corporation are empowered, by charter, to hold a court for the recovery of small debts; but this right is seldom exercised, though debts to any amount may be recovered by a process from the town clerk. Petty sessions for the division are held every Friday. The freedom of the borough, although vested in the corporation, is not enforced; every individual may engage in business indiscriminately. This borough sends two members to parliament: the elective franchise is in the corporation, and the inhabitants at large paying scot and lot: the number of voters is about three undred, and the mayor is the returning officer. |

Wallingford comprises the parishes of All Hallows, St. Leonard, St. Mary the More, and St. Peter, all in the archdeaconry and diocese of Salisbury. The living of All Hallows' is a sinecure rectory, in the patronage of the Master and Fellows of Pembroke College, Oxford: the church was demolished in 1648. The living of St. Leonard's is a discharged rectory, with the perpetual curacy of Sotwell annexed, rated in the king's books at £7. 12. 6., and in the patronage of the Crown: the church is a very ancient structure, but destitute of claim to architectural description, with the exception of some few Norman remains. The living of St. Mary's the More is a discharged rectory, rated in the king's books at £4, endowed with £600 private benefaction, and £800 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Crown: the church is a very handsome edifice, situated in the space near the market-house, with a square embattled tower, ornamented with pinnacles, and on which is the figure of an armed knight on horseback, supposed to represent King Stephen; the tower, which bears the date of 1658, is said to have been built with materials from the castle. The living of St. Peter's is a discharged rectory, rated in the king's books at £6. 1. 3., endowed with £600 private benefaction, £400 royal bounty, and £600 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of W. S. Blackstone, Esq. The church is a very handsome structure, bearing date 1769, with a square tower, surmounted by and elegant spire of Portland stone, supported on pillars and arches, and erected, in 1777, by voluntary subscriptions, to which the learned Sir William Blackstone, who was an inhabitant of the town, and whose remains are deposited in the church, was a liberal contributor. There are places of worship for Baptists, the Society of Friends, Independents, and Wesleyan Methodists. The free school was founded by Walter Bigg, alderman of London, in 1659, by whom it was endowed with £10 per annum, for six boys, who are elected by the aldermen. In 1672, the fraternity of St. John the Baptist, London, now the Merchant Taylors' Company, gave £32. 10. for the erection of a free school, and £2. 10. for the schoolmaster. A school was established, in 1819, for twenty boys and thirty girls, all of whom are educated and clothed: it is supported by voluntary contributions. An infant school, for an unlimited number of children, is held in a handsome brick building, erected by subscription, at a small distance from the town. An almshouse for six poor widows was founded and endowed with £34 per annum, in 1681, by William Angier and Mary his sister; the endowment has been augmented by subsequent benefactions. On Wittenham hill, in this neighbourhood, are some remains of a Roman camp, where numerous coins have been found. Richard de Wallingford, abbot of St. Albans, a celebrated mathematician and mechanic; and John de Wallingford, a monk of that abbey, are supposed to have been natives of this town: the former invented, and presented to the abbey church, an ingenious clock, that shewed not only the course of the sun, moon, and principal stars, but also the ebbing and flowing of the sea. Joan, the fair maid of Kent, and widow of the Black Prince, died here in 1385. Wallingford confers the title of viscount on the Earl of Banbury. |

Two miles west of Aldermaston, and six east from Newbury, is the village of Brimpton, in the parish of its name, and hundred of Faircross. This parish, prior to the reformation, belonged to the knights of St. John of Jerusalem; the manor and estate is now the property of the Earl of Falmouth. The parish church of St. Peter is a small plain edifice. The population of the parish, in 1841, was 412. |

THATCHAM, formerly a market town, is three miles east from Newbury, pleasantly situated near the navigable river Kennet. The manufacture of galloons, doubles, &c. that formerly flourished here has, like the market, gone to decay. The parish church of St. Luke is an ancient structure, having at its south entrance a fine Norman arch. There is a place of worship for Independents; and at GREENHAM (a dependent hamlet) is a chapel of ease. There is an ancient free school in Thatcham well endowed, and an almshouse for nine widows. Population of the parish, in 1831, 2,502, and, in 1841, 2,676. |

Wallingford is a market town, and ancient borough, both corporate and parliamentary, in the hundred of Moreton; 45 miles W. by N. from London, and 13 S. by E. from Oxford - situated on the banks of the Thames, about 3 miles from Wallingford-road station, on the Great Western Railway. History informs us that this place was of considerable importance in the time of the Romans, who had here a fort of extraordinary strength and extent, and which existed at the time of the civil wars, when it was repaired and garrisoned for the king. In 1653 it was demolished, and there now remain but fragments of the mouldering walls, near the river. The name, 'Wallingford,' is said to be derived from Gaullen, or the Roman Vallum, both signifying a place surrounded by a wall or fortifications - from which, with its ford over the Thames, is deduced its appellation. James I. granted to the inhabitants a charter of incorporation, which the municipal act, passed in 1835, set aside, and vested the government of the town in a mayor, four aldermen, and twelve councillors, styling the corporate body 'the mayor, burgesses and commonalty of the borough of Wallingford.' The borough returned two members to the legislature from the earliest period of parliamentary history; but the reform act deprived it of one representative: the mayor is the returning officer. The gentleman at present sitting for the borough is William Seymour Blackstone, Esq. A court leet is held annually on Wednesday in Easter week, in the town-hall. The malt trade at one period flourished here most prosperously; for a number of years, however, it has been on the decline, yet there still remain some respectable establishments in that business. Wallingford comprises the parishes of St. Mary the More, St. Peter, St. Leonard, and Allhallows; the three first-mentioned only have churches. The livings are all rectories - that of Allhallows a sinecure one, in the gift of Pembroke College, Oxford; the benefices of St. Mary the More and St. Leonard are in the gift of the crown; and that of St. Peter in the presentation of the member for the borough - grandson of the late Sir William Blackstone, through whose exertions the church was rebuilt. The spire, which is of a singular form, but very handsome, was erected at the sole expense of this gentleman. The tower of St. Mary the More has pinnacles on its angles, and supports the figure of an equestrian knight, supposed to be King Stephen. The church of St. Leonard is a very ancient structure, but, with the exception of exhibiting a few Norman remains, does not possess any claim to notice. There are places of worship for Baptists, Independents, Wesleyan and Primitive Methodists, and Calvinists. An almshouse, for six poor widows, was founded in 1681; and a school was established in 1819 for twenty boys and thirty girls, all of whom are educated and clothed. The land round Wallingford is in a high state of cultivation, very fertile, and, though rather flat, the general appearance of the country is cheerful and agreeable. Joan, 'the Fair Maid of Kent,' and widow of the Black Prince, died here in 1385; and the learned Sir Wm. Blackstone, whose remains were deposited in St. Peter's church, was a resident of Wallingford. The title of Viscount Wallingford is borne by the successive Earls of Banbury. The market is on Friday; and the fairs on the Thursday in Easter week and September 29th. The borough of Wallingford contained, 1831, 2,467 inhabitants; and at the last census (1841) 2,824. About a mile and a half from Wallingford, in the same hundred as that town, is SOTWELL, an inconsiderable parish, containing a small village and church, the latter dedicated to St. James. The population of the whole parish does not number 150 persons. NEWNHAM, in the parish of Newnham-Murren, and CROWMARSH, in the parish of Crowmarsh-Gifford, are two small villages, in the hundred of Langtree, |

county of Oxford, divided from Wallingford by the Thames; each containing its parish church. That of the first-named, dedicated to St. Mary, is a small structure; and that of the latter to St. Mary Magdalene, cannot boast of greater dimensions. Population of Newnham parish, in 1841, 254, and Crowmarsh 330. About two miles south of Wallingford, in the same hundred, is the village BRIGHTWELL. It has a neat church, dedicated to St. Agatha; the living is a rectory, in the gift of the Bishop of Winchester: the church contains a monument to Dr. Thomas Goodwin, author of a tratise on 'Jewish and Roman Antiquities.' The dissenters have a chapel here. Population, in 1841, 661. About two miles, or somewhat more, S.W. from Wallingford, is the respectable village of CHOLSEY, in the hundred of Reading. Before the reformation this parish contained the largest and most compact farm in this country - the rent amounting, even at that era, to £1,000, annually. The great barn in which the Abbot of Reading deposited his tithes was, at one time, to be seen here. The parish church of St. Mary contains some remains of Norman architecture: the living is a vicarage, with the perpetual curacy of Moulsford united, in the gift of the crown. The Baptists have a chapel in this place. Population of the parish, at the last census (1841) 1,191. |
