Bart joined the Union Castle Shipping Line in 1904 as a bedroom steward, he remained in that job until about 1913. Moving to the Royal Navy at the outbreak of WW1 he spent his time on minesweeping duties in the North Sea. Not a pleasant job for anyone. With the proceeds of his tips while a steward, he financed his marriage to Cecilia (Cissie) Dalman which took place in 1913.
