Born at the begining of WW1, Ron grew up the eldest of three boys in Tooting, London. He served his apprenticeship in the printing industry prior to WW2. In 1940 he joined the Navy and served throughout WW2 as a Petty Officer and then C.P.O. on a variety of ships seeing service in Mombassa, Cape Town, the Eastern Seaboard of America, and off the coast of France during the D-Day landings.
After the war, Ron returned to the printing industry, initially with the press, and then latterly with a lithographic printing firm, where he eventually became night manager. In 1984, after his retirement, he and Lily left London and settled in the village of Newcastleton close to his son, daughter in law and grandchildren. He began a whole new career for himself by taking on the running of the little local monthly paper called The Copshaw Clatter.
In 1995 Ron had a heart attack, and as Lily was not able to look after him on her own, they moved into a 'Granny flat' in their son's house. There he remained until his death in 2002. |
